Saxenda is a weight-loss medication for adults which is self-injected daily.  Saxedna is prescribed to individuals as a  weight loss and managment plan that includes exercise and a lower-calorie diet. It's liraglutide-based.
It's pre-filled in a pen for self-injection.

Saxenda is offered as an injection-ready solution in pre-filled pens. This is a prescription medication, so you will need to a prescription to be sent to your pharmacy to buy the medication.
One injection of Saxenda is administered daily, ideally at the same time each day. It is injected subcutaneously into the thigh, upper arm, or abdomen (belly). The first day's dosage is 0.6 mg. The dose is then raised by 0.6 mg every week until it reaches a maximum of 3.0 mg per day.

After 12 weeks of treatment with 3 mg of Saxenda per day.
A 3ml pre-filled pen for Saxenda is available (18mg of liraglutide). It features a measurement gauge so you can adjust and confirm the dose that needs to be given. Every time you use it, you must connect a fresh, clean needle, and after each injection, you must discard each needle into a sharps container.
Never share Saxenda or reuse needles, and never give anyone else your used Saxenda.

The pattern of appetite control returns to what it was before the treatment when you stop taking Saxenda. The majority of individuals will start eating more again and gain weight. Patients occasionally gain back more weight than they lost. Because of this, Saxenda frequently needs to be taken for the rest of one's life or until another appropriate treatment can be found.
Before agreeing to begin this treatment as part of your weight management plan, it is crucial to be aware of this.

As long as lifestyle modifications, such as dietary and activity modifications, are made concurrently, taking prescribed weight loss medication is an efficient strategy to lose weight. It's crucial that you make every effort to engage in more activity and cut back on your calorie consumption It's possible that you don't drop much weight.
if any, and you might not be able to keep taking these medications. Saxenda may be prescribed for weight management in addition to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity in adult patients with an initial Body Mass Index (BMI) of above 30 (obesity), or above 27 with cardiovascular risks.

Dose escalation schedule will be as following once Saxenda is prescribed.

  • 0.6mg daily for one week and increase by 0.6mg each week until you reach your maintenance dose which is usually 3mg
  • On maintenance dose of 3mg, each pen will last 6 days

This depends if you are starting the treatment for the first time or have been using the treatment.

If you are starting the Saxenda treatment than the dose of Saxenda that needs to be self-injected will change every week until you reach a maintanance dose. This will take about 4 weeks.

The first pen should last you 17 days, and a full pack of 5 pens (which is prescribed) will last you for 6 weeks.

Once a maintenance dose of 3mg is reached, than each pen should last for 6 days and hence a full pack of 5 pens should last for 30 days.

Liraglutide, the active ingredient in Saxenda, is a "glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist" that is already approved in the EU under the brand name Victoza at lower doses (up to 1.8 mg per day) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Saxenda appears to act on the brain regions that control appetite by attaching to GLP-1 receptors in brain cells and thereby raising feelings of fullness and decreasing feelings of hunger. The precise mechanism by which Saxenda helps people lose weight is still unknown.

Using liraglutide while pregnant is not advised. Liraglutide therapy should be stopped if a patient wants to get pregnant or becomes pregnant or are pregnant or are breastfeeding.

Up to 85% of those taking Saxenda® experience some weight loss, which has been shown to be possible with lifestyle changes.

In a clinical study that lasted 56 weeks and included patients who also received Saxenda®, a low-calorie diet, and exercise advice:

  • More than 5% of the body weight was lost by three out of five people (that was an average of 5kg)
  • More than 10% of a person's body weight was lost by one in three people (that was an average of 10kg)

Saxenda® is appropriate for those who have:

  • BMI of 30 or higher
  • a BMI of 27 to 30 and another "co-morbidity" associated with excess weight (such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or sleep apnea).

The medication always functions best when combined with a reduced-calorie, well-balanced diet and increased exercise routine.

Many people who take Saxenda® for the first 12 weeks of treatment will experience weight loss. You won't be able to use the treatment if you haven't lost any weight at this point or if you've lost less weight than a specific amount.

You must use our online consultation if you want to order Saxenda® for weight loss. In order to determine if the treatment is appropriate for you and your weight loss journey, we will ask you a number of questions during this time.

You can pick up your medication at your nominated pharmacy if our doctors deem it appropriate. To make sure the treatment is still the best choice, the pharmacist will also check your BMI while you're there.

If you decide to continue the treatment after receiving your initial supply of Saxenda® via our weight loss service, than simply log in to your account and request a new prescription.

As with all medicines, Saxenda may also cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them.

The most common side effects with Saxenda are following, – these usually go away after a few days or weeks:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Stomach cramps

  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia). This usually occurs during the first 3 months of treatment.

Rare reports of patients taking Saxenda® experiencing severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) have been made. If you experience symptoms such as wheezing, face or throat swelling, a rapid heartbeat, or breathing difficulties, you should consult a doctor right away.

Please visit the package leaflet for a full list of side effects.

If this is your first time using Saxenda treatment, than we will prescribe 18 Saxenda pens

If this is a repeat prescription request than we will prescribe 30 Saxenda pens.
